Remote Learning

Working from home when isolating

At The Lowry Academy, face‑to‑face education is always the priority. Remote education is provided only as a short‑term measure when students are required to work from home due to full or partial school closure, class or year‑group isolation, or individual circumstances where a student is well enough to learn but cannot attend school in person.

Our remote learning provision ensures students continue to access a high‑quality, well‑sequenced curriculum that aligns closely with their in‑school learning.

When remote learning is provided

Remote learning may be provided in the following circumstances:

  • Whole‑school or partial closure, where opening safely is not possible
  • Class or year‑group isolation, where students are required to remain at home
  • Individual isolation, such as short‑term illness or medical reasons, where a student is well enough to continue learning

Remote learning is not an alternative to school attendance and is used alongside ongoing support to help students return to school as soon as possible.

How to access remote learning

Live lessons

  • All live lessons are delivered through Microsoft Teams
  • Students should sign in to their MS Teams account ready for 8:30am
  • Live lessons can be accessed via:
    • The MS Teams calendar, or
    • The student’s class team

During live lessons, students should:

  • Record the subject, lesson title and key words (using a Word document or paper)
  • Watch the lesson and use the chat function appropriately to communicate with the teacher
  • Complete activities set by the teacher during the lesson
  • Complete and submit any homework set

Where accessing a live lesson is not appropriate (for example, some practical Technology lessons), work will be set through Microsoft Assignments, and students will be directed to complete this independently.

Timetable and learning time
  • Students learning remotely are expected to follow their normal school timetable, as far as possible
  • Learning begins at 8:30am
  • Each day includes a combination of live or recorded teacher input, independent work and feedback
  • The amount of learning provided is broadly equivalent to what students would receive in school, adjusted where appropriate for age and individual needs
Recorded lessons and independent study

If students are isolating individually or are unable to access live lessons, they can continue to keep up with the taught curriculum using the resources below.

1. United Learning and Oak National Academy lessons

  • Recorded lessons are available for each subject and link directly to topics students are currently studying
  • Students should select the relevant subject and topic
  • Lessons can be accessed via: https://curriculum.unitedlearning.org.uk/
  • Students must log in using their school account and select Pupil Curriculum

2. Knowledge Organisers

  • Knowledge Organisers are used across all subjects
  • Every KS3 student has a paper copy, and digital versions are available on the website
  • Students should use Knowledge Organisers alongside the guided activities and videos to support learning and revision
Expectations, attendance and engagement
  • Students accessing remote education are marked as absent in line with national guidance
  • Engagement with remote learning is monitored daily
  • Any concerns regarding engagement or attendance are followed up promptly by teaching or pastoral staff

Students are expected to engage respectfully online and follow the school’s Behaviour, Acceptable Use and Online Safety policies at all times.

Support for pupils with SEND and additional needs

Students with SEND or additional needs may require adaptations when learning remotely. This may include:

  • Modified tasks or resources
  • Additional explanation or scaffolding
  • Check‑ins from teaching or support staff
  • Adjustments outlined in an individual support plan

Parents and carers are encouraged to contact the SEND team or SENCo if further support is required.

Safeguarding and online safety

Safeguarding remains a priority during remote learning.

  • All lessons are delivered using school‑approved platforms
  • Staff follow safeguarding procedures and professional expectations at all times
  • Students must adhere to the school’s Online Safety and Acceptable Use policies
  • Any safeguarding concerns should be reported immediately using the school’s usual safeguarding channels
Access to technology

If families experience difficulties accessing a suitable device or reliable internet connection, they should contact the school as soon as possible so support can be explored.

Our Aim

Our aim is to ensure that every student continues to learn, remains supported and stays connected during any period of remote education, while promoting a swift and successful return to full‑time, face‑to‑face learning.
